The typical salary range for this position is $69 840.00 - $91 665.00 annually. The base salary offered will be determined based on the candidate’s job-related knowledge, skills, education, experience, and internal equity considerations.

This posting is for an existing temporary full-time position ending on July 23rd, 2027.

SUMMARY:
Working in close collaboration with the Metro Food Safety team, this role is responsible for the delivery of food safety expertise, training and support to ensure continuous improvement of Metro’s food safety program across Ontario. This role will actively Influence food safety culture through training, coaching, and program enhancements.
Core responsibilities include executing the Safe Food Handler training program, conducting food safety support visits, coordinating follow up actions to support 3rd party auditing, sanitation, and pest control providers. The position also plays a key role in responding to food safety emergencies, addressing concerns raised by stores and conducting audits of distribution centres.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for the end-to-end delivery of the Food Safety Training Program, including planning, execution, certification tracking, and continuous improvement.
  • Responsible for ensuring food handler training and certification compliance to meet requirements of food safety legislation and corporate standards across all Ontario stores.
  • Liaising with Retail Council of Canada (RCC), managing the delivery of the Food Wise food safety certification and program administration throughout Ontario
  • Ensure store operations and merchandising practices comply with government legislation and corporate food safety protocols. This is accomplished through Food Safety training and coaching, on-site assessment and consultation for new and/or renovated stores, and store support visits following 3rd party inspection reports.
  • Support the analysis and review of 3rd party inspection audits.  Independently conduct audits and coaching sessions at store level, making real-time decisions to address food safety risks and provide guidance as required to implement corrective actions.
  • Monitor and review government inspections, primarily municipal health departments, and ensure Operations, Maintenance and other relevant departments have implemented corrective actions to support store operations and correct any deficiencies.
  • Identify and communicate significant issues and trends concerning food safety at store level through analysis of company data. Make recommendation to improve programs to address issues.
  • Report on any quality issues which may have a detrimental effect on sales or the corporate image while at store level. Proactively share information with relevant parties.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Collaborate with Senior Manager to plan and execute internal/external audits and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
  • With Senior Manager Food Safety, analyze trends and recommend strategic improvements to reduce risk and enhance compliance
  • Perform any other food safety, pest or miscellaneous projects to support the overall food safety compliance of the organization.
  • Communicate any legal concerns identified through the food safety or government audit process.
  • Provide support to store and distribution resources in the event of an emergency where food safety is a concern.
  • Update and maintain Food Safety Standard Operating Procedures and scheduled review of Food Safety protocols.
  • From time to time may be required to develop or recommend new or amended processes to improve Food Safety within the organization.
  • Member of Food Safety Emergency Response team providing 24/7 support to stores, distribution centres and other Metro sites in the event of food safety related emergencies.  Serve as a key decision-maker during food safety emergencies, ensuring rapid resolution and compliance.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor degree or College diploma in public health, microbiology, food science or a related field
  • 3+ years’ experience in food safety, auditing, quality assurance or public health
  • Intermediate level of knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite required
  • Excellent time management skills, organizational skills, and scheduling
  • Must have the ability to work cross functionally and at various levels within a corporate environment
  • Must be comfortable working independently and organize time accordingly to meet deadlines
  • Excellent communication skills with experience training or coaching others
  • Extended periods of driving, walking and standing are required
  • 30+ nights / year on the road required (out of town travel)
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation and regulations (e.g. Food Premises Regulations)
  • Experience with public health regulations is preferred
